Grace & Beauty

Grace & Beauty
By: Davika Hill
The world could never have imagined that one of its biggest icons would be a pastor’s daughter and a Jamaican immigrant to America. However, as humble as Grace Jones beginnings were she grew up to be a wild, innovative, phenomenal woman.
“I'VE ALWAYS BEEN A REBEL. I NEVER DO THINGS THE WAY THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO BE DONE. EITHER I GO IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION OR I CREATE A NEW DIRECTION FOR MYSELF, REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE RULES ARE OR WHAT SOCIETY SAYS.” Grace Jones
Grace Jones fearless personality is one of her trademarks. Having been an actress, a singer, and a model she was not afraid to branch out and try new things.  She pushed past the boundaries others put on her and showed the world who she really was.
“PEOPLE HAVE OFTEN MISTAKEN ME FOR A MAN. BUT I AM ALL WOMAN TO ME! BUT WHAT’S A WOMAN SUPPOSED TO FEEL LIKE? I LIKE HARD THINGS. I LIKE SOFT THINGS. I GO FEMININE, I GO MASCULINE. I CHANGE ROLES IN LIFE. I AM BOTH.” – Grace Jones
Grace Jones other trademark is her androgynous look. She pulled it off so successfully that some people were unsure of her gender. Grace’s androgynous appeal was not just in her looks but also in her attitude towards life. She believed that she embodied both masculine and feminine characteristics and that was what truly allowed her to enjoy life.
This Black History Month we celebrate Grace Jones for her fearless attitude and her refreshing outlook on life!
